It doesn’t, we know that. There are a few fearful sods who see visions of Exxon Valdeze the Second. But what we see are Caribou populations increasing due to the warmth of the pipeline providing more regular food.

I’m concerned about our dependence on foreign oil, but I’m even more concerned about our dependence on our own crops!!! What if U.S. ethanol grabs a majority of the market and then record drought was to plague America? (Economic disaster.) Ethanol is such a risky proposition.

Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas, and I really don’t understand how drilling for oil in that great wilderness would harm anything?

And here I was thinking that there was a bit of the old multiple personality disorder going around, something that I can empathize with. Well, that does clear up a few things

As to things that have more than one important use, that also includes crude oil, which is the basic component for plastics. However, I do agree that Government subsides, as a general rule, are stupid, considering that market forces are much better at determining what research and production is needed. There are, of course, some exceptions to this, such as the Military, and other monopolies. Energy production, unfortunately, is a semi-monopoly at the moment, which clouds the issue to a great degree.
